Hadith #806

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أفْضَلُ العُدَدِ ثِقاتُ الإخوانِ۔

This can be translated into English as,

The best assets are reliable brothers.

In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of trustworthy and dependable companions in our lives.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (assets) "عُدَدِ" refers to possessions, resources, or anything of value that one possesses. It encompasses both material and immaterial assets. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that the most valuable assets are not material possessions, but rather, trustworthy and reliable brothers.

The term (reliable) "ثِقاتُ" refers to individuals who are trustworthy, dependable, and loyal. These are the individuals who can be relied upon in times of need, who uphold their promises, and who stand by their principles. They are individuals of integrity and honesty.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in this Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of brotherhood and unity among Muslims in several verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (Quran 49:10)

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers

This verse highlights the significance of fostering strong bonds of brotherhood among Muslims and resolving conflicts amicably.

Furthermore, the Quran encourages Muslims to choose their companions wisely. In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah warns us about the consequences of keeping bad company, saying, (Quran 18:28)

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance

This verse emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with righteous and pious individuals who remind us of Allah and strive to please Him.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that the value of trustworthy and reliable companions cannot be overstated. Such individuals are an invaluable asset in our lives. They provide us with support, guidance, and encouragement. They stand by us in times of difficulty and help us navigate the challenges of life. Their presence brings comfort and peace to our hearts.
