إِنَّ هذِهِ الْقُلُوبَ تَمَلُّ كَمَا تَمَلُّ الاْبْدَانُ، فَابْتَغُوا لَهَا طَرَائِفَ الْحِكْمَةِ۔
The hearts become tired as the bodies become tired. You should therefore search for beautiful sayings for them (to enjoy by way of refreshment).
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #197)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of nurturing and refreshing our hearts, just as we take care of our physical bodies. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to seek out the wisdom and beauty of sayings to rejuvenate our hearts.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound Hadith by analyzing its key words and their implications. The word (qulub) "قُلُوبَ", translated as "hearts," refers to the spiritual center of a person, encompassing their emotions, thoughts, and beliefs. It is the core of our being, the place where our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is established.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) compares the hearts to the physical bodies, which also experience fatigue and exhaustion. Just as our bodies tire from physical exertion, our hearts can become weary from the challenges and trials of life. This weariness can manifest as spiritual stagnation, a lack of motivation, or a feeling of emptiness.
To combat this weariness, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to seek out (tarā'if al-hikmah) "طَرَائِفَ الْحِكْمَةِ", which can be translated as "beautiful sayings" or "subtle wisdom." These sayings are not mere words, but rather profound teachings and insights that touch the depths of our hearts and provide spiritual nourishment.
To further understand the significance of this advice, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Ibrahim (14:24-25), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Have you not seen how Allah sets forth a parable? A good word is like a good tree, its root is firmly fixed, and its branches reach to the heavens. It brings forth its fruit at all times, by the permission of its Lord. And Allah sets forth parables for mankind, so that they may remember.
This Quranic verse beautifully illustrates the power of (beautiful sayings) "طَرَائِفَ الْحِكْمَةِ" in rejuvenating our hearts. Just as a good tree with deep roots and flourishing branches bears fruits continuously, a good word, a wise saying, has a lasting impact on our hearts and souls. It provides us with guidance, inspiration, and motivation to navigate the challenges of life.
Moreover, in Surah Az-Zumar (39:23), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us,
Allah has revealed the best statement, a Book consistent in its verses and repeating. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it; then their skins and their hearts relax at the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah by which He guides whom He wills. And one whom Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide.
This verse emphasizes the transformative power of the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His words. When we engage with the beautiful sayings of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), our hearts find solace and tranquility. The remembrance of Allah brings about a sense of peace and contentment, alleviating the weariness that may have settled in our hearts.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for us to actively seek out and engage with the wisdom and beauty found in the teachings of Islam. By immersing ourselves in the Quran, reflecting upon its verses, and pondering over the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble progeny, we can revitalize our hearts and replenish our spiritual energy.
When we internalize the profound teachings of Islam, we are motivated to live a life of righteousness, compassion, and justice. We become more resilient in the face of challenges, and our hearts are filled with love and gratitude towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This spiritual nourishment not only benefits us individually but also has a ripple effect on our relationships with others and our communities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of nurturing our hearts and seeking out the wisdom and beauty of sayings to refresh our souls. By engaging with the teachings of Islam, we can find solace, guidance, and motivation to navigate the challenges of life. Let us strive to incorporate the profound teachings of Islam into our daily lives, allowing our hearts to be rejuvenated and our souls to be uplifted. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek and benefit from the beautiful sayings of wisdom.
