(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

بِلُزُومِ الحَقِّ يَحْصُلُ الاِسْتِظْهارُ۔

This can be translated as,

By clinging to the truth, support is received.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement in light of the Quran. The word (biluzoomi) "بِلُزُومِ" means to cling or hold firmly to something. In this context, it refers to holding firmly onto the truth. The word (al-haqq) "الحَقِّ" means the truth, which is an essential attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is the ultimate reality, the absolute truth that encompasses all aspects of existence.

The phrase (yahsulu al-istizhaar) "يَحْصُلُ الاِسْتِظْهارُ" can be understood as "support is received." It implies that when one firmly clings to the truth, they will attain support and assistance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This support can manifest in various ways, such as guidance, blessings, protection, and success in both this world and the Hereafter.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of holding onto the truth and the rewards that come with it. In Surah Al-Imran (3:101), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And how could you disbelieve while to you are being recited the verses of Allah and among you is His Messenger? And whoever holds firmly to Allah has [indeed] been guided to a straight path.

This verse highlights that those who hold firmly to Allah and His Messenger are guided to the straight path, which is the path of truth and righteousness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:16), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And the people of Moses made, after [his departure], from their ornaments a calf - an image having a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to a way? They took it [for worship] and they were wrongdoers.

This verse illustrates the consequences of abandoning the truth and following falsehood. The people of Moses deviated from the truth by worshiping a golden calf, which ultimately led them astray and caused them to commit wrongdoing.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to firmly hold onto the truth in all aspects of their lives. By doing so, they will receive support and guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Clinging to the truth means adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (). It means upholding justice, honesty, integrity, and righteousness in our actions and interactions.

When we hold onto the truth, we become a source of inspiration and guidance for others. Our actions and words become a reflection of the divine truth, attracting others towards the path of righteousness. Moreover, clinging to the truth empowers us to resist the temptations of falsehood and deception that may surround us. It strengthens our character, builds our resilience, and enables us to navigate through the challenges of life with steadfastness and determination.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thought-provoking saying reminds us of the importance of clinging to the truth. By firmly holding onto the truth, we receive support and guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This support manifests in various forms and leads to success in both this world and the Hereafter. Let us strive to be people of truth, upholding justice, righteousness, and integrity in all aspects of our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to always hold onto the truth.
