Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The worst person is one who assists [the oppressor] against the oppressed.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of standing up against oppression and supporting the oppressed. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (sharr) "شَرُّ" in Arabic means "worst" or "evil." It refers to something that is morally wrong or harmful. In this context, it signifies the lowest and most despicable character trait a person can possess. The word (nās) "نَّاسِ" means "people" or "individuals." It encompasses all individuals, regardless of their social status, race, or religion.

The phrase (man yu'īnu) "مَنْ يُعِينُ" translates to "one who assists" or "one who supports." It refers to a person who actively aids or collaborates with an oppressor. This assistance can take various forms, such as providing resources, advice, or protection to the oppressor.

The word (ʿalā) "عَلَى" means "against" or "upon." It signifies that the assistance is directed towards the oppressor, strengthening their position and enabling them to continue their oppressive actions.

On the other hand, the word (al-maẓlūm) "المَظْلُومِ" refers to the oppressed. It represents those who are subjected to injustice, cruelty, or tyranny. The oppressed are the victims of the oppressor's actions and are in dire need of support and justice.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of standing up against oppression and supporting the oppressed. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8),

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse highlights the obligation upon Muslims to stand firmly for justice, even if it goes against their own interests or the interests of their loved ones. It emphasizes the importance of being witnesses for Allah and not allowing personal biases to cloud one's judgment.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse emphasizes the duty of Muslims to intervene and resolve conflicts between believers. It also highlights the necessity of fighting against oppression and striving for justice. Muslims are commanded to stand up against the oppressor and support the oppressed until justice is restored.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran. It serves as a reminder to Muslims that assisting the oppressor is a grave sin and a betrayal of the principles of justice and compassion.

By assisting the oppressor, one becomes complicit in their wrongdoing and shares in their guilt. Such actions not only harm the oppressed but also contribute to the perpetuation of injustice in society. Conversely, supporting the oppressed is a noble act that upholds the values of justice, mercy, and equality.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the importance of standing up against oppression. His words serve as a timeless reminder for Muslims to be vigilant in recognizing and combating injustice in all its forms.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the worst person is the one who supports the oppressor against the oppressed. It is our duty as Muslims to stand up against oppression, support the oppressed, and strive for justice. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in upholding these principles and grant us the strength to be advocates for justice and compassion.
