نالَ العِزَّ مَنْ رُزِقَ القَناعَةَ۔
One who has been granted contentment has acquired honour.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Contentment And The Contented)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
نالَ العِزَّ مَنْ رُزِقَ القَناعَةَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who has been granted contentment has acquired honor.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran. The key word in this Hadith is (qana'ah) "قَناعَةَ", which refers to contentment or satisfaction with what one has been provided. It is the state of being pleased and grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Quran emphasizes the importance of contentment in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:155-157)
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.' Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
This verse highlights the importance of patience and contentment during times of hardship. Those who remain content and patient in the face of adversity are blessed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and are guided on the right path. They understand that their ultimate return is to Allah and that He is the source of all blessings.
Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah At-Tawbah, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 9:49)
And among them is he who says, 'Permit me [to remain at home] and do not put me to trial.' Unquestionably, into the trial they have fallen. And indeed, Hell will encompass the disbelievers.
This verse highlights the danger of being discontent and ungrateful. Some individuals may seek to avoid trials and difficulties, thinking that it will bring them honor and success. However, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns that those who shun trials and lack contentment will ultimately fall into a greater trial and will be encompassed by the punishment of Hell.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that true honor lies in being content with what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has provided us. When we are grateful for the blessings in our lives, whether they are material or spiritual, we attain a sense of inner peace and tranquility. We are no longer consumed by the desire for more, but rather find fulfillment in the present moment.
Contentment also protects us from the negative consequences of greed and envy. When we are content, we are less likely to engage in harmful behaviors such as hoarding wealth, exploiting others, or coveting what belongs to others. Instead, we focus on using our blessings in a manner that benefits ourselves and society as a whole.
Furthermore, contentment allows us to maintain a positive outlook and a grateful heart, even in the face of difficulties. It enables us to trust in Allah's wisdom and plan for us, knowing that He knows what is best for us. This mindset strengthens our faith and helps us navigate through the challenges of life with patience and resilience.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true honor and success lie in contentment. By being grateful for what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon us, we attain a sense of inner peace, protect ourselves from negative traits, and strengthen our faith. Let us strive to cultivate contentment in our lives and seek honor through gratitude and satisfaction with Allah's blessings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be content and honor us in this world and the Hereafter.
