— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Schemer And Plotter)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لاأمانَةَ لِمَكُور۔" which translates to

There is no trustworthiness in the schemer.

This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of trustworthiness and integrity in our actions and dealings with others.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words used. The word (amānah) "أمانة" refers to trustworthiness, honesty, and fulfilling one's responsibilities. It encompasses the idea of being reliable and faithful in upholding the trust placed upon us by others. The word (makūr) "مكور" refers to someone who schemes, plots, or deceives others. It signifies a person who is cunning, manipulative, and lacks sincerity in their intentions.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:27), Allah says,

O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].

This verse highlights the gravity of betraying trusts, whether they are entrusted to us by Allah, the Prophet (), or our fellow human beings.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah says,

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our contractual obligations, which is a manifestation of trustworthiness. By fulfilling our commitments, we demonstrate our integrity and reliability in our interactions with others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims that trustworthiness is a fundamental quality that should be upheld in all aspects of our lives. It warns against the dangers of scheming and deceit, which erode trust and lead to discord and disharmony within society.

When a person lacks trustworthiness and engages in scheming, they undermine the very fabric of trust that holds relationships, communities, and societies together. Trust is the foundation upon which cooperation, collaboration, and mutual respect are built. Without trust, relationships become fragile, and conflicts arise.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of sincerity and genuine intentions in our actions. Islam teaches us that our intentions are crucial, and they shape the moral value of our deeds. Allah says in Surah Al-Isra (17:84),

Say, 'Each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in way.'

This verse reminds us that Allah knows the true intentions behind our actions, and it is our sincerity that determines the righteousness of our deeds.

In light of this Hadith, Muslims are reminded to be trustworthy, sincere, and honest in their dealings with others. We should strive to fulfill our responsibilities and commitments, whether they are personal, professional, or social. By doing so, we contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society, where trust and integrity prevail.

Let us reflect upon the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to embody the qualities of trustworthiness and sincerity in our daily lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be people of integrity and protect us from the pitfalls of scheming and deceit. May we be among those who are trusted and relied upon by others, and may our actions be a reflection of the noble teachings of Islam.
