Hadith #10028

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Wealth is reduced by spending [it] whereas knowledge grows when it is given away [and shared with others].

This wise utterance highlights the contrasting nature of wealth and knowledge. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (الْمَالُ) "wealth" refers to material possessions and financial resources. It encompasses money, property, and other tangible assets. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that wealth diminishes when it is spent or used for various purposes. This aligns with the Quranic teachings that encourage Muslims to spend their wealth in the way of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and for the betterment of society.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse highlights the concept of spending wealth for the sake of Allah, which leads to its multiplication and growth.

On the other hand, the word (الْعِلْمُ) "knowledge" refers to intellectual and spiritual understanding. It encompasses religious knowledge, scientific knowledge, and wisdom. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),

Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and sharing it with others.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when we spend our wealth for noble causes, it diminishes, but the rewards and blessings associated with it are multiplied. Similarly, when we share our knowledge with others, it not only benefits them but also enhances our own understanding and increases our knowledge.

The consequences of following the teachings of this Hadith are profound. By spending our wealth wisely and sharing our knowledge generously, we become agents of positive change in society. We contribute to the well-being of others, promote justice and equality, and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims.
