مَنْ أيْقَنَ بِالمُجازاةِ لَمْ يُؤثِرْ غَيْرَ الحُسْنى۔
One who is certain about requital does not choose [to do] anything but good.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Requital And Reward)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who is certain about requital does not choose [to do] anything but good.
Let us delve into the essence of this statement in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. The word (aiqana) "أيْقَنَ" means to be certain or have firm belief. (almujazah) "المُجازاةِ" refers to requital or recompense. And (alhusna) "الحُسْنى" means that which is good or beautiful.
The concept of requital or recompense is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the idea that every action has consequences and that individuals will be held accountable for their deeds. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 16:97)
Whoever does good, whether male or female, and is a believer, We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah states, (Quran 50:16-23)
And We have certainly created man and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein. When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]. And the intoxication of death will bring the truth; that is what you were trying to avoid. And the Horn will be blown. That is the Day of [carrying out] the threat. And every soul will come, with it a driver and a witness. [It will be said], 'You were certainly in unmindfulness of this, and We have removed from you your cover, so your sight, this Day, is sharp.' And his companion, [the angel], will say, 'This [record] is what is with me, prepared.'
From these verses, we understand that Allah is fully aware of our actions, thoughts, and intentions. He has appointed angels to record every single deed we perform. On the Day of Judgment, these records will be presented to us, and we will be held accountable for our choices.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in the Hadith highlights the importance of having certainty in the consequences of our actions. When one firmly believes in the concept of requital, they are motivated to choose only that which is good and righteous. This belief acts as a guiding principle in their decision-making process, ensuring that they prioritize virtuous actions over anything else.
For instance, when faced with a situation where they have the opportunity to harm someone or engage in dishonesty, a person who is certain about requital will refrain from such actions. They will choose kindness, honesty, and justice, knowing that their choices will have an impact not only in this world but also in the Hereafter.
This certainty in requital also serves as a deterrent from engaging in sinful behavior. When one is aware that their actions will be accounted for and that they will face the consequences, they are more likely to abstain from wrongdoing. This awareness instills a sense of responsibility and accountability, encouraging individuals to strive for righteousness and avoid actions that may lead to negative outcomes.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of having certainty in the concept of requital. This belief should guide our choices and motivate us to prioritize good deeds. By understanding that our actions have consequences, we become more mindful of our behavior and strive to lead a life that is pleasing to Allah. May we all strive to be among those who choose nothing but good, and may Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to do so.
