Patience is one of the two triumphs.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Patience is one of the two triumphs.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims of all backgrounds. To fully understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (صَبْرُ) "sabr" in Arabic refers to patience, endurance, and steadfastness in the face of trials and tribulations. It is a virtue highly emphasized in Islam, as it enables believers to remain steadfast in their faith and actions, even during challenging times. Sabr is not merely passive resignation, but an active state of perseverance and resilience.
The term (ظَفَرَيْنِ) "dhafarayn" is derived from the root word (ظَفَرَ) "dhafara", which means triumph or victory. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that patience is one of the two triumphs, implying that it is a key factor in achieving success and overcoming difficulties.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of patience and its rewards. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse reminds Muslims that patience is not only a personal virtue but also a means of seeking Allah's assistance and support.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr (103:3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
Here, Allah emphasizes that true success lies in faith, good deeds, and mutual encouragement towards truth and patience.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that patience is not only a virtue but also a means of achieving triumph and success. It is through patience that believers can navigate the challenges of life, maintain their faith, and ultimately attain victory in this world and the Hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified the virtue of patience throughout his life. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, he remained steadfast in his commitment to Islam and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). His patience in the face of adversity serves as an inspiration for Muslims to emulate.
Practicing patience has profound consequences in our lives. It enables us to maintain a calm and composed demeanor during difficult times, preventing us from succumbing to despair or anger. Patience allows us to make rational decisions, seek solutions to our problems, and endure hardships with grace and resilience.
Moreover, patience strengthens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) by demonstrating our trust in His wisdom and decree. It is through patience that we can develop a deeper connection with our Creator, seeking His guidance and relying on His support during challenging times.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that patience is one of the two triumphs. It is a virtue that enables believers to navigate the trials of life, maintain their faith, and ultimately attain success in this world and the Hereafter. By practicing patience, we can emulate the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the ability to cultivate patience in our lives and grant us success in both worlds.
