مَنْ أهْمَلَ نَفْسَهُ أهْلَكَها۔
One who neglects his soul destroys it.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أهْمَلَ نَفْسَهُ أهْلَكَها۔
This can be translated as,
One who neglects his soul destroys it.
Let us delve into the profound wisdom of this statement in light of the teachings of the Quran.
The word (ahmala) "أهْمَلَ" in this Hadith refers to neglecting or disregarding something. It implies a lack of attention, care, and effort towards oneself. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that such negligence can lead to the destruction of one's soul.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, self-improvement, and self-accountability. In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah says,
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse reminds us of the need to constantly evaluate our actions and intentions, as every soul will be held accountable for its deeds on the Day of Judgment. Neglecting this responsibility can have dire consequences, as mentioned in the Hadith.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that the soul is a precious gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). In Surah Al-Isra (17:85), Allah says,
And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, 'The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind has not been given of knowledge except a little.'
This verse highlights the significance of the soul and its connection to our spiritual journey. Neglecting the soul means neglecting the very essence of our existence and purpose in this world.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a wake-up call for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being. Neglecting the soul can manifest in various ways, such as neglecting acts of worship, indulging in sinful behavior, or failing to cultivate good character.
For example, neglecting the soul can lead to the abandonment of daily prayers, which are the cornerstone of our connection with Allah. In Surah Maryam (19:59), Allah says,
But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil.
This verse highlights the consequences of neglecting prayer, as it leads to a deviation from the path of righteousness and exposes one to the dangers of sinful desires.
Neglecting the soul can also result in moral decay and the loss of ethical values. In Surah Al-Qasas (28:14), Allah says,
And when he [Moses] reached his full strength and was [mentally] mature, We bestowed upon him judgement and knowledge. And thus do We reward the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of nurturing the soul through acquiring knowledge and practicing righteous deeds. Neglecting this aspect can lead to a stagnation of personal growth and a decline in moral integrity.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize the well-being of their souls. Neglecting the soul can have severe consequences, both in this world and the hereafter. By reflecting on our actions, seeking knowledge, and striving to improve ourselves, we can protect and nurture our souls, ultimately leading to spiritual growth and fulfillment. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to never neglect our souls.
