— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

All praise is due to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), the Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the immense spiritual and material benefits of sitting in the masjid from after dawn until sunrise, engaging in the remembrance and praise of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This act of devotion is described as being more effective in facilitating sustenance than traveling to various parts of the land to earn a livelihood.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a comprehensive understanding. The word (julus) "جُلُوس" refers to sitting or remaining seated, indicating the importance of continuity and dedication in this act of worship. (al-masjid) "المَسْجِدِ" refers to the mosque, the sacred place of worship where Muslims gather to pray and engage in acts of devotion. It is a space where the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is given priority.

The Hadith highlights the specific time frame for this act of devotion, which is from after dawn until sunrise. This period is significant as it allows individuals to engage in the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during the blessed time of the morning. It is a time when the heart is inclined towards spirituality and the mind is clear and focused.

The phrase (ila hīn tulu'i ash-shams)

إلى حينِ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ

refers to sitting in the masjid until the rising of the sun. This emphasizes the importance of dedicating a substantial amount of time to this act of worship, not merely a brief moment. It encourages Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being over worldly pursuits during this time.

The purpose of this act of devotion is to engage in the remembrance and praise of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By immersing oneself in the remembrance of Allah, the Glorified, individuals establish a deep connection with their Creator and strengthen their faith. This act of devotion serves as a means of seeking nearness to Allah and attaining His blessings and mercy.

To support the significance of this act of devotion, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Jumu'ah (62:10):

And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.

This verse emphasizes the importance of remembering Allah after the prayer, indicating that continuous remembrance leads to success and prosperity.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:205), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.

This verse highlights the importance of remembering Allah in the mornings and evenings, which aligns with the time frame mentioned in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). It emphasizes the need for continuous remembrance throughout the day.

The Hadith also draws a comparison between sitting in the masjid for the purpose of remembrance and traveling to different parts of the land to earn a livelihood. It highlights the superiority of the former in facilitating sustenance. This comparison serves as a reminder that while worldly efforts are necessary for sustenance, the spiritual aspect should not be neglected.

By dedicating time to the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the masjid, individuals not only strengthen their relationship with their Creator but also open doors for blessings and ease in their worldly affairs. This act of devotion brings about a sense of tranquility, contentment, and reliance on Allah's provisions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of sitting in the masjid from after dawn until sunrise, engaging in the remembrance and praise of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This act of devotion is described as being more effective in facilitating sustenance than traveling to different parts of the land. By prioritizing spiritual well-being and dedicating time to the remembrance of Allah, Muslims can attain both spiritual and material blessings in their lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to engage in this act of devotion and bless us with His abundant provisions.
