اَلعَفْوُ يُوجِبُ المَجْدَ۔
Forgiveness brings about eminence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forgiveness And Pardon)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure family, his noble companions, and all the righteous Muslims.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العفو يوجب المجد" which translates to
Forgiveness brings about eminence.
This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense power and virtue of forgiveness in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (al-'afw) "العفو" refers to forgiveness, which entails pardoning and letting go of any grudges or ill feelings towards others. It is an act of mercy and compassion that stems from a generous heart. (yujib) "يوجب" means to bring about or result in, while (al-majd) "المجد" signifies eminence, honor, and glory.
The Quranic verses beautifully support the significance of forgiveness in our lives as Muslims. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:134),
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of forgiveness as a characteristic of those who strive to do good and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse reminds us of the reciprocal nature of forgiveness. When we forgive others, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is more inclined to forgive us and shower His mercy upon us.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound impact forgiveness can have on an individual and society as a whole. When we choose to forgive, we rise above our ego and negative emotions, and we embrace the qualities of mercy and compassion. Forgiveness allows us to heal and move forward, fostering unity and harmony among Muslims.
Moreover, forgiveness has the power to transform relationships and bring about positive change. It can mend broken bonds, reconcile differences, and create an atmosphere of love and understanding. By forgiving others, we not only elevate our own character but also inspire others to follow the path of forgiveness and reconciliation.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his vast knowledge and wisdom. His statement on forgiveness reflects his deep understanding of the teachings of Islam and the importance of forgiveness in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). As Muslims, we should strive to emulate his example and incorporate forgiveness into our daily lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that forgiveness is not only a noble act but also a means to attain eminence and honor in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By forgiving others, we demonstrate our capacity for mercy and compassion, and we pave the way for personal growth, harmonious relationships, and a united Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to forgive others and seek His forgiveness.
