(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

There is no reward for one who has no [good] deeds.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for Muslims to actively engage in righteous actions in order to attain rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith. The word (thawab) "ثَوَابَ" refers to the reward or recompense that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grants to individuals for their good deeds. It encompasses both the blessings and the eternal rewards that await believers in the Hereafter. The word (la'amal) "لاعَمَلَ" translates to "no deeds" or "no actions." It signifies the absence of any righteous acts or efforts undertaken by an individual.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we must turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good deeds and their correlation with attaining rewards. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 25, Allah says,

And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow.

This verse highlights the connection between faith, righteous actions, and the promise of Paradise.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 30, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds.

This verse reinforces the notion that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not overlook the efforts of those who engage in righteous actions. Their rewards will be preserved and granted to them in the Hereafter.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. He reminds us that simply professing faith or having good intentions is not sufficient to attain rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through our actions and deeds that we demonstrate our commitment to Islam and seek the pleasure of Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to actively engage in acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, giving charity, and performing good deeds towards others. These actions not only benefit individuals in this world but also serve as a means to earn rewards in the Hereafter.

For instance, if a person claims to have faith but does not fulfill their obligations towards Allah, such as neglecting their prayers or disregarding the rights of others, they cannot expect to be rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Their lack of deeds reflects a lack of sincerity and commitment to their faith.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly evaluate their actions and strive to improve themselves. It motivates us to actively seek opportunities to perform good deeds and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims. By doing so, we not only earn rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but also contribute to the betterment of society and our own spiritual growth.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

There is no reward for one who has no [good] deeds,

emphasizes the importance of engaging in righteous actions to earn rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the correlation between faith, good deeds, and the promise of Paradise. Muslims are urged to actively participate in acts of worship and perform good deeds to demonstrate their commitment to Islam and seek the pleasure of Allah. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to engage in righteous actions and earn His abundant rewards.
