Hadith #7872

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "آفَةُ الوَفاءِ الغَدْرُ۔" This can be translated into English as,

The bane of loyalty is treachery.

In this beautiful saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of treachery and betrayal, particularly in the context of loyalty.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "آفَةُ" refers to a calamity, a scourge, or a destructive element. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:27), Allah warns against treachery and betrayal. He says,

O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].

This verse serves as a stern reminder of the severe consequences of treachery and betrayal. It underscores the importance of remaining loyal to Allah, His Messenger, and the trusts placed upon us.

In light of these Quranic verses, we can understand the meaning behind Imam Ali's statement. Loyalty is a noble virtue that is highly regarded in Islam. It is a quality that fosters trust, unity, and stability within society. However, when loyalty is tainted by treachery, it becomes a destructive force that brings harm and ruin.

Treachery undermines the very foundations of trust and integrity. It fractures relationships, breeds suspicion, and creates a climate of uncertainty. When individuals betray the trust placed upon them, they not only harm others but also tarnish their own character. The consequences of treachery ripple through communities, causing division and discord.

Imam Ali's statement serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to uphold the values of loyalty and integrity. It urges us to honor our commitments, remain steadfast in our relationships, and never betray the trust placed upon us. By doing so, we contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society.
