(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ عَقَلَ فَهِمَ۔" This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (aql) "عَقَلَ" in Arabic refers to intelligence, reason, and understanding. It encompasses the ability to think critically, analyze, and comprehend. It is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that distinguishes humans from other creations. The Quran emphasizes the importance of using our intellect in numerous verses.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:43),

And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.

Here, Allah highlights the significance of knowledge and understanding, indicating that true comprehension is reserved for those who possess intelligence.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good.

This verse emphasizes that wisdom, which is closely linked to intelligence, is a great blessing from Allah. It enables individuals to make sound judgments and navigate through life with clarity.

Now, let us explore the second part of the Hadith, (fahima) "فَهِمَ", which means to comprehend or understand. This word signifies the application of intelligence and the ability to grasp knowledge deeply. It implies not only acquiring knowledge but also internalizing and implementing it in one's life.

In Surah Al-Qasas (28:55), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.'

This verse highlights the importance of understanding and discernment. It teaches us to avoid engaging in futile arguments and instead focus on our own actions. It is through comprehension that we can maintain peace and avoid ignorance.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that intelligence alone is not enough; it must be accompanied by comprehension. True understanding leads to actions that reflect wisdom and knowledge. It motivates us to seek knowledge, reflect upon it, and apply it in our daily lives.

When we possess intelligence and comprehend, we are better equipped to make informed decisions, seek the truth, and fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims. It enables us to navigate the complexities of life, distinguish between right and wrong, and contribute positively to society.

Moreover, the Hadith serves as a reminder that intelligence and comprehension are not limited to worldly matters. They extend to the realm of faith and spirituality. By using our intellect to understand the teachings of Islam, we can deepen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strengthen our faith.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that intelligence is a divine gift, and true understanding is its fruit. It urges us to cultivate our intellect, seek knowledge, and apply it in our lives. By doing so, we can become individuals who not only possess intelligence but also comprehend the wisdom of Allah's guidance. May Allah grant us the ability to use our intellect to comprehend His message and live according to His teachings.
