Hadith #7818

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to leave aside matters that are irrelevant to us and instead focus on the important work that will bring us salvation in the Hereafter. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith in light of the Quran.

The first part of the Hadith states,

Leave aside that which does not concern you.

The word (da') "دَعْ" means to leave or abandon, while (ma) "ما" signifies that which or what. (la ya'nika) "لايَعْنيكَ" translates to

does not concern you.

This part of the Hadith emphasizes the importance of not involving ourselves in matters that have no relevance to our lives or our duties as Muslims.

The Quran supports this concept in several verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse teaches us to refrain from engaging in unnecessary gossip or mockery, as it serves no purpose other than causing harm and division among people.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.

This verse reminds us to focus our efforts on acts of righteousness and cooperation, rather than involving ourselves in sinful or aggressive behavior.

The second part of the Hadith states,

and busy yourself with the important work that will save you [in the Hereafter].

The word (ishtaghl) "اشْتَغِلْ" means to occupy oneself or engage in something, while (bi muhimmika) "بِمُهِمِّكَ" refers to the important work or matters. This part of the Hadith emphasizes the significance of prioritizing our efforts towards actions that will lead to our salvation in the Hereafter.

The Quran provides numerous examples of the importance of focusing on righteous deeds. In Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse highlights the importance of faith, righteous actions, and enjoining one another in truth and patience.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:1-11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the qualities of the successful believers. They are those who establish prayer, give zakah, guard their private parts, fulfill their trusts and promises, and strive for the betterment of society. These verses emphasize the importance of engaging in actions that are pleasing to Allah and beneficial for ourselves and others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to prioritize our time and energy towards matters that truly matter in the sight of Allah. By leaving aside irrelevant matters and focusing on important deeds, we can attain salvation in the Hereafter. This Hadith serves as a reminder for us to reflect on our actions and ensure that we are utilizing our time and resources wisely.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to abandon matters that do not concern us and instead focus on important work that will lead to our salvation. By aligning our actions with the teachings of the Quran, we can prioritize righteousness, cooperation, and beneficial deeds.
