In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الحمق شين" which translates to

Foolishness is a disgrace.

In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the negative consequences and implications of foolishness.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "الحمق" refers to foolishness or stupidity, indicating a lack of wisdom, understanding, or rationality. It encompasses actions or decisions that are irrational, ignorant, or lacking in foresight. "شين" means disgrace or shame, representing the dishonorable and degrading nature of foolishness.

The Quran provides us with guidance and examples that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of wisdom, knowledge, and intellect in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 16:78)

And Allah has extracted you from the wombs of your mothers not knowing a thing, and He made for you hearing and vision and intellect that perhaps you would be grateful

This verse highlights the gift of intellect bestowed upon humanity by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and encourages us to utilize it wisely.

Furthermore, the Quran warns against the consequences of foolishness and ignorance. In Surah Al-A'raf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the consequences of the people of Pharaoh who rejected the signs of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) out of ignorance and arrogance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 7:136)

So We took retribution from them, and We drowned them in the sea because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them

This verse serves as a reminder that foolishness and ignorance can lead to disastrous outcomes and the loss of divine guidance.
