اَلشَّكُّ كُفْرٌ۔
Doubt [in the existence of God] is disbelief.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Doubt And Misgiving)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Doubt [in the existence of God] is disbelief.
This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the gravity of doubt in matters of faith. To fully comprehend the significance of this hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.
The word (shakk) "شَّكُّ" refers to doubt or uncertainty. It is derived from the root word (shakka) "شَكَّ", which means to doubt, hesitate, or waver. Doubt is a state of indecision or skepticism, where one is uncertain about the truth or validity of something.
The word (kufr) "كُفْرٌ" translates to disbelief or ingratitude. It stems from the root word (kafara) "كَفَرَ", which means to cover up, deny, or reject. In the context of this hadith, kufr refers to the rejection or denial of the existence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To further understand the gravity of doubt being equated with disbelief, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:28),
How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.
This verse highlights the power and ability of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to create and resurrect life. Doubting the existence of Allah is akin to denying His immense power and ability to bring forth life from nothingness. Such doubt undermines the very foundation of faith and leads one towards disbelief.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj (22:55), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly or there comes to them the punishment of a barren Day.
This verse highlights the perpetual state of doubt that disbelievers find themselves in. Their denial of the truth is rooted in their refusal to acknowledge the signs and evidences of Allah's existence. Doubt, if left unchecked, can lead to a hardening of the heart and a complete rejection of faith.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the danger of doubt in matters of faith. Doubt can lead to a weakening of one's iman (faith) and hinder spiritual growth. It is essential for Muslims to seek knowledge, reflect upon the signs of Allah's existence in the universe, and strengthen their faith through certainty.
By equating doubt with disbelief, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of cultivating a firm belief in the existence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His attributes. Muslims should strive to overcome doubts by seeking knowledge, engaging in contemplation, and strengthening their relationship with Allah through acts of worship and supplication.
In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims of the gravity of doubt in matters of faith. Doubt, if left unchecked, can lead to disbelief and a rejection of the existence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is imperative for Muslims to seek knowledge, reflect upon the signs of Allah's existence, and strengthen their faith through certainty. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and protect us from the whispers of doubt.
