مَنْ مَلَكَ شَهْوَتَهُ كَمُلَتْ مُرُوَّتُهُ، وحَسُنَتْ عاقِبَتُهُ۔
Whoever controls his lust, his magnanimity becomes complete and his end becomes good.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,
Whoever controls his lust, his magnanimity becomes complete and his end becomes good.
Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith and explore its significance in the light of the Quran.
The key word in this Hadith is (his lust) "شَهْوَةَهُ", which refers to the desires and passions that exist within every human being. These desires can manifest in various forms, such as physical desires, materialistic desires, or even desires for power and control. It is important to note that Islam does not condemn desires themselves, but rather emphasizes the need for their proper control and moderation.
The Hadith highlights the importance of self-control and discipline in managing our desires. When a person is able to control their lust, their magnanimity or generosity becomes complete. This means that by restraining our desires, we are able to develop a sense of selflessness and generosity towards others. This selflessness is a characteristic of the noble souls who prioritize the needs of others over their own desires.
The Quran supports this concept of self-control and its positive impact on our character. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (3:133-134)
And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous. Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of self-restraint in various aspects of our lives, including controlling our anger and forgiving others. By restraining our negative emotions and desires, we are able to cultivate a sense of compassion and forgiveness, which are essential qualities of a righteous person.
Furthermore, the Hadith states that by controlling our lust, our end becomes good. This refers to the ultimate outcome and consequences of our actions. When we are able to control our desires and act in accordance with the teachings of Islam, we are more likely to experience positive outcomes and blessings in this life and the hereafter.
The Quran provides numerous examples of how self-control and righteousness lead to a good end. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (22:32)
And whoever honors the symbols of Allah - indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.
This verse highlights the importance of honoring the symbols of Allah, which includes restraining our desires and acting in accordance with His commandments. By doing so, we attain piety and righteousness, which ultimately leads to a good end.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of self-control and discipline in managing our desires. By restraining our lust, we are able to develop generosity and selflessness, and ultimately experience positive outcomes in this life and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to control our desires and guide us towards a good end.
