مَنْ عانَدَ الحَقَّ لَزِمَهُ الوَهْنُ۔
One who opposes the truth is seized by powerlessness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ عانَدَ الحَقَّ لَزِمَهُ الوَهْنُ۔
This can be translated as,
One who opposes the truth is seized by powerlessness.
Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (‘anada) "عانَدَ" in the Hadith refers to opposing or resisting the truth. It signifies a deliberate act of going against what is right and just. The word (al-haqq) "الحَقَّ" refers to the truth, which is an attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encompasses the ultimate reality, righteousness, and the divine guidance revealed in the Quran.
To understand the consequences of opposing the truth, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:120),
And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, 'Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.' If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.
This verse highlights the importance of adhering to the truth and not succumbing to the desires and opinions of others. Those who oppose the truth, seeking validation from others, are ultimately left powerless and devoid of divine support. They are unable to find true guidance and protection from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The consequence of opposing the truth is further emphasized in Surah Yunus (10:82), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And Allah will establish the truth by His words, even if the criminals dislike it.
This verse assures us that the truth will prevail, regardless of the opposition it faces. Those who oppose the truth will ultimately find themselves weakened and unable to withstand the force of divine justice.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that opposing the truth leads to powerlessness and spiritual weakness. When individuals choose to go against what is right and just, they distance themselves from the divine guidance and blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
This Hadith also serves as a motivation for Muslims to seek knowledge and understanding of the truth. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and his statement highlights the importance of acquiring knowledge and aligning oneself with the truth. By seeking knowledge and adhering to the truth, Muslims can avoid the consequences of powerlessness and instead find strength and guidance in their lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the consequences of opposing the truth. Those who go against what is right and just will find themselves weakened and devoid of divine support. It is crucial for Muslims to seek knowledge and align themselves with the truth, as this is the path to strength and guidance in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize and follow the truth, and protect us from the consequences of opposing it.
