Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he mentions three essential qualities that, when possessed, complete one's faith: intellect (عَقْلُ), forbearance (حِلْمُ), and knowledge (عِلْمُ). Let us delve into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in the light of the Quran.

Firstly, "عَقْلُ" refers to intellect or rationality. It is the faculty of reasoning and understanding that distinguishes humans from other creatures. The Quran emphasizes the importance of intellect in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.

This verse highlights the significance of utilizing our intellect to comprehend the truth and make informed decisions.

Secondly, "حِلْمُ" refers to forbearance or patience. It is the ability to remain calm and composed in the face of adversity or provocation. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the virtue of patience and its reward. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].

This verse highlights the importance of forbearance in seeking assistance from Allah and facing challenges with resilience.

Lastly, "عِلْمُ" refers to knowledge or understanding. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The Quran encourages seeking knowledge and highlights its significance in various verses. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

This verse emphasizes the superiority of those who possess knowledge and highlights the importance of seeking knowledge to attain a higher level of understanding.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. By mentioning intellect, forbearance, and knowledge as the three qualities that complete one's faith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of a holistic approach to faith.

Intellect enables us to comprehend the teachings of Islam and make rational decisions based on them. It prevents us from blindly following traditions or succumbing to ignorance. Forbearance allows us to control our emotions and respond to challenging situations with patience and wisdom. It helps us maintain harmony and resolve conflicts peacefully. Knowledge equips us with the understanding of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (). It empowers us to distinguish between right and wrong, and to convey the message of Islam effectively.

When these three qualities are combined, they form a strong foundation for a complete and balanced faith. Intellect guides us in understanding the principles of Islam, forbearance enables us to practice those principles with patience and tolerance, and knowledge equips us to share the beauty of Islam with others.

By possessing these qualities, Muslims can navigate the complexities of life, engage in meaningful dialogue, and contribute positively to society. They become ambassadors of Islam, reflecting the true essence of the religion through their actions and interactions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of intellect, forbearance, and knowledge in completing one's faith. These qualities enable Muslims to understand, practice, and share the teachings of Islam effectively. By nurturing these qualities within ourselves, we can strive towards a comprehensive and enlightened faith that encompasses both spiritual and intellectual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate these qualities and strengthen our faith.
