(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Pauper)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The richest people in the Hereafter are the poorest of them in this world.

This amazing Hadith highlights the importance of prioritizing the eternal life over the temporary world. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (aghnā) "أغْنَى" in the Hadith refers to the "richest" or the most affluent individuals. It signifies those who possess abundant wealth, resources, and material possessions. On the other hand, the word (afqaruhum) "أفْقَرُهُمْ" means the "poorest" or the most destitute among people. It refers to those who lack material wealth and live in poverty and hardship in this world.

To understand the essence of this Hadith, we must turn to the Quran, which provides numerous verses emphasizing the transient nature of worldly possessions and the significance of focusing on the Hereafter. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46),

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse reminds us that worldly wealth and possessions are merely temporary adornments that do not guarantee success in the Hereafter. The true measure of richness lies in the good deeds and actions that one accumulates in their lifetime. These deeds are the currency that holds value in the eternal life.

Another verse that complements the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse encourages believers to strive for the Hereafter while not neglecting their responsibilities in this world. It emphasizes the importance of utilizing the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to secure a place in the eternal abode. It also cautions against indulging in corruption and materialistic pursuits, as they can lead one astray from the path of righteousness.

Reflecting on the Hadith, we understand that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the paradoxical nature of worldly wealth and spiritual richness. Often, those who possess immense material wealth become engrossed in their possessions, neglecting their spiritual growth and the pursuit of good deeds. Conversely, those who experience poverty and hardship in this world often find solace in their faith and prioritize their spiritual development.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to detach themselves from the allure of worldly possessions and focus on accumulating spiritual wealth. It encourages us to invest our time, energy, and resources in acts of worship, charity, and kindness towards others. These are the true measures of richness that will benefit us in the Hereafter.

Moreover, this Hadith teaches us the importance of contentment and gratitude in our lives. Even if we find ourselves in difficult circumstances, we should remember that true richness lies in our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the good deeds we perform. By being grateful for what we have and using it to benefit others, we can attain spiritual richness and secure a place in the Hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize the eternal life over the temporary world. It urges us to detach ourselves from the pursuit of material wealth and focus on accumulating spiritual richness through good deeds and acts of worship. By doing so, we can become among the richest people in the Hereafter, regardless of our worldly circumstances. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and implement the teachings of this Hadith in our lives.
