بِنَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ (في) الظُّلَماءِ، وبِنا تَسَنَّمْتُمُ العَلْياءَ، وبِنَا انْفَجَرْتُمْ عَنِ السِّرارِ۔
Through us you were guided in the darkness, and by us you ascended the peaks [of knowledge and faith], and by way of us did you break through the pitch-black night [into the light of day].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a thought-provoking saying that highlights the pivotal role played by the Ahl al-Bayt in guiding the Muslim Ummah. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its deeper meanings in light of the Quran.
The first important word in this Hadith is (ihtadaytum) "اهْتَدَيْتُمْ", which means "you were guided." This word signifies the guidance that the Muslims received through the Ahl al-Bayt. It emphasizes the fact that the true guidance comes from the divinely appointed leaders who possess the knowledge and wisdom bestowed upon them by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The second significant word is (tasannamtu) "تَسَنَّمْتُمُ", which means "you ascended." This word conveys the idea that the believers attain higher levels of knowledge and faith through the teachings and guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt. It implies that the Ahl al-Bayt are the means through which the believers can elevate themselves spiritually and intellectually.
The third crucial word is (anfajartum) "انْفَجَرْتُمْ", which means "you broke through." This word signifies the liberation of the believers from the darkness of ignorance and confusion. It implies that the Ahl al-Bayt are the source of enlightenment and clarity, enabling the believers to break free from the shackles of ignorance and find the path of truth.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:125):
So whoever Allah wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islam; and whoever He wants to misguide - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allah place defilement upon those who do not believe.
This verse emphasizes that true guidance comes from Allah, and He expands the hearts of those whom He wants to guide. In the context of the Hadith, we can understand that the Ahl al-Bayt, being the chosen ones of Allah, are the means through which this guidance is bestowed upon the believers. It is through their teachings and guidance that the hearts of the believers are expanded, enabling them to embrace Islam fully.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-An'am (6:39), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And those who have disbelieved - their allies are Taghut. They take them out of the light into darknesses. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.
This verse highlights the consequences of following false leaders and deviating from the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt. Those who turn away from the true path are led into darkness and are deprived of the light of guidance. Conversely, those who adhere to the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt are guided towards the light and are saved from the eternal torment of the Fire.
Reflecting on the Hadith, we can understand that the Ahl al-Bayt, particularly Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), possess a deep well of knowledge and wisdom. They are the shining beacons of guidance in the darkness of ignorance and confusion. Through their teachings, the believers are guided towards the path of righteousness, ascend to higher levels of knowledge and faith, and break free from the darkness of ignorance.
The consequences of following the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt are immense. It leads to spiritual growth, intellectual enlightenment, and a deeper understanding of the true essence of Islam. By adhering to their teachings, the believers can attain a state of tranquility and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to all Muslims of the pivotal role played by the Ahl al-Bayt in guiding the Ummah. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from the divinely appointed leaders. By following their teachings, the believers can attain true guidance, ascend to higher levels of knowledge and faith, and break free from the darkness of ignorance. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to recognize and follow the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt, and may He bless us with their intercession on the Day of Judgment.
