(Ghurar al-Hikam: Planning)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ ساءَ تَدْبِيرُهُ بَطَلَ تَقْديرُهُ۔

This can be translated as,

One whose planning is bad, his estimation is nullified.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful saying in light of the Quran.

The word (saa'a) "ساءَ" in the Hadith refers to something that is evil, harmful, or negative. It signifies a planning or strategy that is flawed, misguided, or lacking in wisdom. This word emphasizes the importance of having a well-thought-out and wise approach to any task or decision.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:42)

And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].

This verse highlights the importance of honesty and integrity in our planning and decision-making processes. It reminds us that our intentions and actions should always be aligned with the truth, for any deviation from it will lead to negative consequences.

The word (tadbiruhu) "تَدْبِيرُهُ" in the Hadith refers to one's planning or strategy. It encompasses the process of carefully considering and organizing the steps needed to achieve a goal. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that if this planning is flawed or misguided, the entire estimation or judgment will be nullified.

In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 6:152)

And do not approach the orphan's property except in a way that is best until he reaches maturity. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity. And when you testify, be just, even if [it concerns] a near relative. And the covenant of Allah fulfill. This has He instructed you that you may remember.

This verse highlights the importance of fairness and justice in our planning and decision-making. It reminds us that our estimations and judgments should be based on righteousness, equality, and fulfilling our responsibilities.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that our planning and estimation must be rooted in wisdom, truth, and justice. If we fail to consider these principles, our efforts will be in vain and our judgments will be nullified.

For example, if a person plans to deceive others for personal gain, their estimation of success may be based on falsehood and deceit. However, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Mu'minun, (Quran 24:19)

Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.

This verse reminds us that any planning or estimation based on immorality or harm to others will ultimately lead to a painful punishment.

On the other hand, if a person plans with sincerity, honesty, and righteousness, their estimation will be based on the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:60)

And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.

This verse assures us that if our planning is aligned with the cause of Allah and His guidance, our estimation of success will be fulfilled and rewarded.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of having a well-thought-out and wise approach to our planning and decision-making. It reminds us that our estimation and judgment will be nullified if our planning is flawed, misguided, or lacking in wisdom. By aligning our planning with the principles of truth, justice, and righteousness, we can ensure that our estimations are fulfilled and rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us in our planning and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
