Hadith #9664

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

قيمَةُ كُلِّ امْرِء ما يَعْلَمُ۔

This can be translated as,

The value of every person [gauged by] is what he knows.

This profound statement highlights the significance of knowledge and its impact on an individual's worth.

To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words. The word (value) "قيمَةُ" refers to the worth or importance of something. (every) "كُلِّ" emphasizes that this value applies to every person, regardless of their background or social status. (person) "امْرِء" encompasses all individuals, emphasizing the universality of this principle. Finally, (what he knows) "ما يَعْلَمُ" refers to the knowledge possessed by an individual.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the significance of knowledge and its impact on an individual's value. For instance, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It implies that knowledge elevates an individual's status and differentiates them from others.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.

This verse emphasizes that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It signifies that those who possess knowledge will be raised in ranks and rewarded accordingly.

Through seeking knowledge of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), individuals can deepen their spirituality and strengthen their relationship with their Creator.
