مَنْ تَفَهَّمَ فَهِمَ۔
One who tries to understand, understands.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Understanding)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ تَفَهَّمَ فَهِمَ۔" This concise statement carries a impactful message that can be understood by delving into the meanings of its key words.
The word (tafahhama) "تَفَهَّمَ" is derived from the root word (fahima) "فَهِمَ", which means to comprehend, understand, or grasp the meaning of something. It implies a deep level of understanding that goes beyond mere superficial knowledge. It involves intellectual engagement, reflection, and internalization of knowledge.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. This Hadith encourages Muslims to actively engage in the pursuit of knowledge and to strive for a deeper understanding of the teachings of Islam.
To support this exegesis, we find numerous Quranic verses that emphasize the significance of seeking knowledge and understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes the superiority of knowledge and the importance of seeking it.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse highlights the elevated status of those who possess knowledge and emphasizes the honor and reward that comes with seeking knowledge.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages Muslims to go beyond the surface level of knowledge and to strive for a deeper understanding. It urges us to engage with the teachings of Islam, ponder over their meanings, and apply them in our lives. By doing so, we can gain a comprehensive understanding of the religion and its principles.
When we actively seek to understand, we open ourselves up to a multitude of benefits. Firstly, seeking knowledge allows us to strengthen our faith and deepen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It enables us to comprehend the wisdom behind His commands and the beauty of His creation.
Secondly, seeking understanding equips us with the tools to navigate the challenges and complexities of life. It enables us to make informed decisions, solve problems, and overcome obstacles. By seeking knowledge, we gain the ability to critically analyze situations and make choices that align with our values and principles.
Moreover, seeking understanding fosters unity and harmony within the Muslim community. When we strive to comprehend the teachings of Islam, we can engage in meaningful dialogue with others, exchange ideas, and bridge differences. This leads to a stronger sense of brotherhood and cooperation among Muslims.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to actively seek knowledge and understanding. It encourages us to go beyond the surface level of knowledge and strive for a deeper comprehension of the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can strengthen our faith, navigate life's challenges, and foster unity within the Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek knowledge and understand His religion.
