رُبَّ جامِع لِمَنْ لايَشْكُرُهُ۔
Many a person accumulates [wealth] for one who is not grateful to him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wealth And Riches)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
رُبَّ جامِع لِمَنْ لايَشْكُرُهُ۔
This Hadith highlights the situation where a person accumulates wealth or favors for someone who does not express gratitude towards them.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their implications. The word (jami') "جامِع" refers to someone who gathers or accumulates something. In this context, it refers to a person who gathers wealth or favors. The word (la yashkuruhu) "لايَشْكُرُهُ" means that the recipient of these favors or wealth does not express gratitude towards the one who has provided them.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Ibrahim, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 14:7)
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of gratitude and the promise of increased blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for those who express gratitude.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Naml, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 27:40)
And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
This verse highlights that gratitude is not only beneficial for the one who expresses it, but it also reflects the greatness and independence of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims about the importance of gratitude and appreciation for the blessings bestowed upon us. It warns against taking these blessings for granted and failing to acknowledge the efforts of those who have contributed to our well-being.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the ingratitude of certain individuals who receive wealth or favors without expressing gratitude towards the one who has provided them. This ingratitude not only reflects a lack of manners and appreciation, but it also goes against the teachings of Islam.
The consequences of ingratitude are not limited to the loss of blessings in this world. In fact, the Quran warns about the severe punishment for those who deny the favors of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to cultivate a sense of gratitude and express it towards both Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and those who have been a source of blessings in our lives.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their actions and to always express gratitude for the favors they receive. It encourages us to be grateful not only to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but also to our fellow human beings who contribute to our well-being. By doing so, we not only fulfill our obligations as Muslims but also foster a sense of unity and appreciation within our communities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of gratitude and appreciation. It serves as a warning against the ingratitude of those who fail to acknowledge the efforts and favors of others. By reflecting on this Hadith and implementing its teachings in our lives, we can strive to be grateful individuals who recognize and express gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be grateful and appreciative Muslims.
