(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

شُكْرُ النِّعْمَةِ يَقْضي بِمَزيدِها، ويُوجِبُ تَجْديدَها۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of showing gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (shukr) "شُكْرُ" in Arabic means gratitude or thankfulness. It is derived from the root word (shakara) "شَكَرَ", which implies acknowledging and appreciating the blessings of Allah. Gratitude is not merely a verbal expression; it is a state of the heart that manifests in our actions and attitudes. By being grateful, we recognize that all blessings come from Allah, and we acknowledge His infinite mercy and generosity.

The Hadith states that showing gratitude for a blessing leads to its increase. This concept is beautifully echoed in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse highlights the direct correlation between gratitude and an increase in blessings. When we express gratitude for the blessings we have, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises to bestow upon us even more.

Furthermore, the Hadith mentions that gratitude leads to the renewal of blessings. This renewal can be understood as the continuous flow of blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). In Surah Ibrahim (14:34), Allah says,

And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.

This verse reminds us that Allah's blessings are countless and that He continuously renews them for those who are grateful.

The act of showing gratitude has profound implications in our lives. When we are grateful, we develop a positive mindset and a sense of contentment. Gratitude helps us recognize the blessings that we may have taken for granted, such as good health, a loving family, or even the ability to breathe. It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have been blessed with, fostering a sense of satisfaction and happiness.

Moreover, gratitude strengthens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a form of worship that demonstrates our humility and dependence on Him. When we express gratitude, we acknowledge that we are not self-sufficient and that all blessings come from Allah alone. This recognition deepens our faith and strengthens our connection with the Creator.

Conversely, ingratitude leads to the loss of blessings. When we fail to appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us, we risk losing them. In Surah Al-'Ankabut (29:40), Allah warns,

And those who are ungrateful - their [portion is] Our punishment.

Ingratitude is a manifestation of arrogance and a lack of appreciation for Allah's favors. It distances us from Allah's mercy and opens the door to His punishment.

As Muslims, we should strive to cultivate an attitude of gratitude in our daily lives. We should express gratitude not only for the obvious blessings but also for the challenges and hardships that shape our character and strengthen our faith. By doing so, we fulfill the purpose of our existence, which is to worship Allah and be grateful for His countless blessings.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of showing gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Gratitude leads to an increase in blessings and their continuous renewal. It has a profound impact on our mindset, our relationship with Allah, and our overall well-being. Let us strive to be grateful Muslims, recognizing and appreciating the countless blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us. May Allah grant us the ability to be truly grateful and may He increase us in His blessings.
