لاشَرَفَ أعْلى مِنَ الحِلْمِ۔
There is no honour higher than forbearance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forbearance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاشَرَفَ أعْلى مِنَ الحِلْمِ۔
This can be translated as,
There is no honour higher than forbearance.
Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (sharafa) "شَرَفَ" in Arabic refers to honor, dignity, or nobility. It signifies a high status or position that is respected and revered. The word (a'la) "أعْلى" means higher or superior. And (al-hilm) "الحِلْمِ" translates to forbearance or patience.
Forbearance is a quality that encompasses patience, self-control, and the ability to remain calm in the face of adversity. It is the ability to control one's emotions and reactions, even in the most challenging situations. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that there is no honor greater than possessing this quality.
The Quran supports this profound statement of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in several verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:134),
Those who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the importance of restraining anger and forgiving others, which are essential components of forbearance. It is through these actions that a person attains a higher level of honor and earns the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Another verse that supports the concept of forbearance is found in Surah Al-Furqan (25:63), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the qualities of the servants of the Most Merciful. Among these qualities is their ability to walk on the earth with humility and forbearance. This verse emphasizes that those who possess forbearance are truly honorable in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds great significance in our daily lives as Muslims. Forbearance is not only about controlling our anger but also about responding to difficult situations with wisdom and patience. It is about maintaining composure and seeking peaceful resolutions, even when faced with injustice or adversity.
By embodying forbearance, we can inspire others and create a harmonious society. It allows us to break the cycle of anger and retaliation, replacing it with understanding and forgiveness. This quality enables us to navigate through challenges with grace and dignity, earning the respect and admiration of those around us.
Furthermore, possessing forbearance aligns with the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself, who was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His ability to remain patient and composed in the most difficult of circumstances is a testament to the power of forbearance.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that there is no honor higher than forbearance. This quality is emphasized in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) praises those who possess forbearance and highlights its importance in attaining a higher level of honor. As Muslims, we should strive to cultivate this quality within ourselves, following the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) through our actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to embody forbearance in all aspects of our lives.
