مَنْ عَذُبَ لِسانُهُ كَثُرَ إخْوانُهُ۔
One whose tongue is sweet [and polite], his friends increase.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Tongue)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One whose tongue is sweet [and polite], his friends increase.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of using kind and gentle words in our interactions with others. It highlights the positive impact that polite speech can have on our relationships and the bonds we form with others.
The word (athub) "عَذُبَ" in the Hadith refers to sweetness or pleasantness. It signifies the use of words that are gentle, respectful, and considerate. When our tongues are adorned with such sweetness, it not only reflects our character but also attracts people towards us, leading to an increase in the number of friends and companions we have.
The significance of using pleasant speech can be found in various verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to speak kindly and gently, reminding us of the power of words. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:83)
And speak to people good [words]
This verse emphasizes the importance of using good words in our interactions with others, as it has a positive impact on our relationships.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to (Quran 17:80)
lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers
This verse highlights the need for kindness and humility in our speech, especially towards those who look up to us as leaders or role models. When we speak with sweetness and politeness, we create an environment of love, respect, and understanding.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that our words have the power to shape our relationships and influence those around us. When we speak kindly, we not only attract friends but also inspire others to adopt the same behavior. On the other hand, harsh and disrespectful words can create distance and animosity between people.
Let us reflect on the consequences of our words and strive to make our tongues sweet and polite. By doing so, we can build strong and lasting friendships, foster a sense of unity within the Muslim community, and contribute to a more harmonious society. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in using our words wisely and bless us with the ability to speak with kindness and compassion.
