السَّخاءُ سَجِيَّةٌ، الشَّرَفُ مَزِيَّةٌ۔
Generosity is a [righteous] trait; honour is a virtue.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Generosity is a [righteous] trait; honor is a virtue.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
The word (سَخَاءُ) "sakha" in Arabic refers to generosity, magnanimity, and liberality. It encompasses the act of giving freely, without expecting anything in return. Generosity is a praiseworthy quality that reflects the noble character of a person. It is an attribute that is highly regarded in Islam and is encouraged in numerous verses of the Quran.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse highlights the immense reward that awaits those who are generous in spending their wealth for the sake of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Insan (76:8-9), Allah describes the qualities of the righteous believers, saying,
And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'
This verse emphasizes the selflessness and sincerity that should accompany acts of generosity.
The second part of the Hadith states,
Honor is a virtue.
The word (شَرَفُ) "sharaf" in Arabic refers to honor, dignity, and nobility. It signifies a person's elevated status and esteemed position in society. Honor is a characteristic that is highly valued in Islam and is associated with righteousness and moral excellence.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) mentions the importance of honor and dignity in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that true honor lies in piety and righteousness, rather than in worldly status or lineage.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:70), Allah states,
And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
This verse highlights the inherent honor and dignity bestowed upon every human being by Allah, regardless of their social or economic status.
Reflecting on the essence of this Hadith, we understand that generosity and honor are intertwined virtues that complement each other. A person who possesses generosity in their heart is likely to be honorable and respected in society. Likewise, a person of honor is more inclined to be generous and compassionate towards others.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, exemplified these qualities throughout his life. His generosity and magnanimity were renowned, as he would often give away his wealth and possessions to the needy and deserving. His honor and dignity were evident in his unwavering commitment to justice, truth, and the principles of Islam.
As Muslims, we should strive to embody these virtues in our lives. By being generous and selfless, we can contribute to the well-being of others and earn the pleasure of Allah. By upholding honor and dignity, we can uphold the values of Islam and inspire others to do the same.
May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be generous and honorable individuals, following in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May He bless us with the wisdom to understand the true essence of these virtues and the strength to practice them in our daily lives. Ameen.
