Hadith #241

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إِذَا أَمْلَقْتُمْ فَتَاجرِوا اللهَ بِالصَّدَقَةِ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

When you fall into destitution, trade with Allah through charity.

Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (amlaqtum) "أَمْلَقْتُمْ" is derived from the root word (malaqa) "مَلَقَ", which means to fall into destitution or poverty. It refers to a state of extreme need or financial hardship. The word (tajiroo) "فَتَاجِرُوا" is derived from the root word (tijarah) "تَجَارَة", which means trade or commerce. It implies engaging in a transaction or exchange. And finally, the word (as-sadaqah) "الصَّدَقَةِ" refers to charity, specifically voluntary acts of giving to those in need.

To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261,

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse highlights the concept of trading with Allah through charity. Just as a seed sown in the ground multiplies and yields abundant crops, the act of giving in the way of Allah multiplies our rewards manifold. When we are faced with destitution or financial difficulties, instead of despairing or seeking worldly means alone, this Hadith encourages us to turn to Allah and engage in the trade of charity.

Charity is not merely a means of helping those in need; it is a transaction with Allah Himself. By giving in charity, we are investing in our relationship with our Creator. We are demonstrating our trust in His promise to reward us abundantly for our acts of kindness and generosity. It is a trade that yields both worldly and spiritual benefits.

Moreover, the act of giving in times of destitution is a manifestation of true faith and reliance on Allah. It is a demonstration of our belief that our sustenance and provisions come from Him alone. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah At-Talaq, verse 2-3,

And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.

When we engage in the trade of charity, we are not only fulfilling the rights of those in need but also purifying our own souls. It is a means of seeking forgiveness and expiating our sins. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 103,

Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

The consequences of trading with Allah through charity are immense. Not only do we alleviate the suffering of those in need, but we also strengthen our relationship with Allah. We become recipients of His mercy, blessings, and provisions. Our hearts are filled with gratitude and contentment, knowing that we have fulfilled our duty as believers.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the profound wisdom and knowledge of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His words encapsulate the essence of true faith and the importance of relying on Allah in times of difficulty. By engaging in the trade of charity, we not only uplift ourselves but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.
