The bosom of the wise is the safe of his secrets; cheerfulness is the bond of friendship; effective forbearance is the grave of short-comings. Mutual reconciliation is the covering for shortcomings; and he who admires himself attracts many opponents against him.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #6)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he provides us with valuable insights into the qualities and behaviors of a wise and virtuous individual. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its meanings in light of the Quran.
The Hadith begins by stating,
The bosom of the wise is the safe of his secrets.
Here, the word (sadr) "صَدْرُ" refers to the heart or the innermost being of a person. The term (aql) "عَاقِلِ" signifies an individual who possesses intellect and wisdom. Thus, this part of the Hadith emphasizes the importance of guarding one's secrets and keeping them hidden within the depths of the heart.
This concept of safeguarding secrets aligns with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:5-6),
And who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed - But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors.
This verse highlights the importance of preserving one's privacy and maintaining modesty in all aspects of life.
The Hadith then states,
Cheerfulness is the bond of friendship.
The word (bashashah) "بَشَاشَةُ" refers to cheerfulness, joy, and a positive demeanor. It is through such qualities that bonds of friendship are strengthened and relationships flourish. The Quran emphasizes the importance of maintaining good relations with others and spreading kindness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:36),
And worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.
Next, the Hadith states,
Effective forbearance is the grave of shortcomings.
The term (ihtimal) "احْتِمَالُ" refers to patience, tolerance, and forbearance. It is through these qualities that one can bury and overcome their own shortcomings. By exercising patience and understanding, we can prevent our flaws from causing harm or discord. The Quran encourages patience and forgiveness in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:134),
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
The Hadith continues,
Mutual reconciliation is the covering for shortcomings.
This part emphasizes the importance of resolving conflicts and reconciling with one another. By seeking forgiveness and working towards unity, we can overcome our shortcomings and maintain harmonious relationships. The Quran encourages reconciliation and forgiveness in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10),
Indeed, the believers are brothers. So make peace between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
Finally, the Hadith concludes by stating,
And he who admires himself attracts many opponents against him.
This part serves as a reminder to avoid arrogance and pride. When one becomes self-centered and overly impressed with themselves, it often leads to the alienation and opposition of others. The Quran warns against arrogance and reminds us of the importance of humility. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:23),
So that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides us with profound insights into the qualities and behaviors of a wise and virtuous individual. It emphasizes the importance of guarding secrets, maintaining cheerfulness, practicing forbearance, seeking reconciliation, and avoiding arrogance. By embodying these qualities, we can cultivate strong relationships, overcome our shortcomings, and strive towards a harmonious and righteous life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to implement these teachings in our lives.
