عِنْدَ اِنْسِدادِ الفُرَجِ تَبْدُومَطالِعُ الفَرَجِ۔
When the openings [and ways] get blocked, the rays of relief begin to appear.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Relief And Waiting For Relief)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
When the openings [and ways] get blocked, the rays of relief begin to appear.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds deep meaning and can be understood by analyzing its key words.
The word (furaj) "فُرَجِ" in this Hadith refers to openings, ways, or paths. It signifies the various avenues and opportunities that present themselves to individuals in their lives. These openings can be physical, such as doors or gates, or metaphorical, such as opportunities for success, happiness, or spiritual growth.
The word (mataali) "مَطَالِعُ" means rays or beams. It refers to the light or guidance that emanates from a source and illuminates the path ahead. In this context, it represents the relief, solutions, or blessings that come forth when the openings in one's life become blocked or closed off.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Inshirah (94:5-6),
Indeed, with hardship, there is relief. Indeed, with hardship, there is relief.
These verses remind us that relief and ease follow moments of difficulty and hardship. When we face challenges and obstacles in our lives, it is a test from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to see how we respond and to strengthen our faith.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nahl (16:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Or that Allah may catch them in the midst of their going to and fro (in their jobs), so that there be no escape for them (from Allah's punishment)?
This verse highlights the concept of openings or ways being blocked, where individuals find themselves trapped or unable to find a way out. It serves as a reminder that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has full control over our lives and can close off paths that we may have relied upon.
When we combine the teachings of the Quran with the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand that when our usual avenues and opportunities become blocked, it is a sign that relief and guidance are on the horizon. Just as darkness is followed by the dawn, our moments of hardship and struggle are often followed by moments of ease and blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
This Hadith teaches us to have faith and patience during times of difficulty. It reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate source of relief and guidance, and He will provide a way out for us when all seems lost. It encourages us to seek solace and hope in the face of adversity, knowing that the rays of relief will eventually shine upon us.
As Muslims, we should reflect on this Hadith and strive to maintain a positive mindset during challenging times. We should turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in prayer, seeking His guidance and assistance. We should also remember the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who faced numerous trials and tribulations throughout his life but remained steadfast in his faith and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that when the openings in our lives become blocked, it is a sign that relief and guidance are on the way. We should have faith, patience, and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), knowing that He is the ultimate source of relief and blessings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to endure hardships and the wisdom to recognize the rays of relief when they appear.
