— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
نِعْمَ الحَسَبُ حُسْنُ الخُلْقِ
which translates to
The best distinction is good character.
In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of possessing good character as a means of true distinction and excellence.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (hasab) "حَسَبُ" refers to distinction or superiority, while (husn) "حُسْنُ" means goodness or excellence. (khulq) "خُلْقِ" refers to character, manners, or behavior. Thus, the Hadith conveys that the best form of distinction or superiority lies in possessing good character.
This profound teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is beautifully supported by numerous verses from the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good character and moral conduct in the Quran.
In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by saying, (Quran 68:4)
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
This verse highlights the exemplary character of the Prophet (ﷺ) and serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for similar moral excellence.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 16:128)
Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good.
This verse emphasizes that Allah is with those who possess taqwa (fear of Allah) and engage in righteous deeds, which includes displaying good character.
The Quran also teaches us that good character is not limited to one's interactions with fellow human beings, but extends to all aspects of life. In Surah Al-Mu'minun, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the qualities of the successful believers, stating, (Quran 23:8-9)
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive. And those who are in their testimonies upright. And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer.
These verses highlight the importance of fulfilling one's responsibilities, being truthful, and maintaining a strong connection with Allah through prayer.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that true distinction and superiority are not based on wealth, status, or physical appearance, but rather on the quality of one's character. Good character encompasses traits such as honesty, kindness, humility, patience, and forgiveness. It is through the cultivation of these virtues that one can truly excel in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Possessing good character has far-reaching consequences in both personal and societal realms. On an individual level, it brings inner peace, contentment, and a sense of fulfillment. It allows one to navigate through life's challenges with grace and resilience. Moreover, good character fosters harmonious relationships, strengthens communities, and promotes social cohesion.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded of the importance of continuously striving to improve our character and conduct. It serves as a call to action for Muslims to embody the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the best form of distinction and superiority lies in possessing good character. This teaching is beautifully supported by various verses from the Quran that emphasize the importance of moral conduct and righteous deeds. By embodying good character, we not only attain personal excellence but also contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate and maintain good character in all aspects of our lives.
