سُنَّةُ اللِّئامِ الجُحُودُ۔
The practice of the vile ones is denial.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Vile)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "سُنَّةُ اللِّئامِ الجُحُودُ۔" This can be translated as:
The practice of the vile ones is denial.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (sunnah) "سُنَّةُ" refers to a customary practice or way of life. It implies a consistent pattern of behavior that is followed by a group of people. In this context, it refers to the actions and behavior of the (li'aam) "لِّئَامِ", which means the vile or wicked individuals. These are the people who have deviated from the path of righteousness and have chosen to engage in sinful and immoral actions.
The word (al-juhud) "الجُحُودُ" translates to denial. It signifies the act of rejecting or denying the truth, particularly in matters of faith and belief. It represents a state of obstinacy and disbelief, where one consciously turns away from the guidance of Allah and refuses to acknowledge His existence and His commandments.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 18:
Deaf, dumb and blind, so they will not return [to the right path].
This verse describes the state of those who have chosen to deny the truth and turn away from the guidance of Allah. They have become spiritually deaf, unable to hear the call of truth, and spiritually blind, unable to see the signs of Allah's existence and His mercy. Their denial has led them to a state of ignorance and heedlessness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 39, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
This verse emphasizes the consequences of denial and disbelief. Those who reject the signs of Allah and deny His existence will be destined for the punishment of the Hellfire, where they will dwell forever.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), through this Hadith, draws our attention to the destructive nature of denial and the path of the wicked. By engaging in denial, these individuals not only distance themselves from the truth but also expose themselves to the severe consequences of their actions. Their denial leads them towards a life of sin and immorality, ultimately leading to their eternal punishment in the Hereafter.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to stay steadfast on the path of righteousness and to avoid the practices of the wicked. It encourages us to seek knowledge, reflect upon the signs of Allah, and strengthen our faith. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from falling into the trap of denial and ensure that our actions align with the teachings of Islam.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of recognizing the dangers of denial and the significance of embracing the truth. As Muslims, it is our duty to seek knowledge, understand the teachings of the Quran, and follow the example set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his purified progeny. By doing so, we can safeguard ourselves from the practices of the wicked and strive towards attaining the pleasure of Allah in this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and protect us from the practices of the wicked. May He grant us the wisdom and understanding to recognize the truth and the strength to adhere to it. Ameen.
