The human being is [distinguished] by his intellect.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Human Being)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad () and his pure Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The human being is [distinguished] by his intellect.

This thought-provoking Hadith highlights the unique characteristic that sets humans apart from other creations - their intellect. The word used in this Hadith to describe the human being is "insan," which refers to the entire human race, both male and female.

The term "aql" is translated as "intellect" in this Hadith. It refers to the faculty of reasoning, understanding, and discernment that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has bestowed upon humans. It is through this intellect that humans have the ability to think critically, make rational decisions, and comprehend the world around them.

The importance of intellect is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:30)

And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.' They said, 'Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?' Allah said, 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.'

This verse highlights the superiority of humans over the angels, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) chose to bestow upon them the authority on earth. This authority is a result of the intellect that Allah has granted to humans, enabling them to fulfill their responsibilities and make choices.

Furthermore, the Quran also emphasizes the importance of using one's intellect in seeking knowledge and understanding. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 39:9)

Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and understanding, and those who do not. It emphasizes the importance of utilizing one's intellect to gain knowledge and seek understanding, as it is through this process that one can truly comprehend the world and fulfill their purpose in life.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims of the significance of their intellect. It encourages them to utilize this divine gift in order to make informed decisions, seek knowledge, and fulfill their responsibilities as vicegerents of Allah on earth.

By recognizing the importance of intellect, Muslims are motivated to engage in critical thinking, reflect on their actions, and make choices that align with the teachings of Islam. This leads to personal growth, societal development, and a deeper understanding of the world and its complexities.

Moreover, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also highlights the consequences of neglecting or misusing one's intellect. When humans fail to utilize their intellect and instead engage in ignorance, arrogance, or irrational behavior, they deviate from the path of righteousness and may cause harm to themselves and others.

Therefore, Muslims are reminded to constantly strive for intellectual growth and to seek knowledge from reliable sources. They are encouraged to engage in critical thinking, question assumptions, and seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of intellect in distinguishing the human being from other creations. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to utilize their intellect in seeking knowledge, making informed decisions, and fulfilling their responsibilities as vicegerents of Allah on earth. By doing so, Muslims can strive for personal growth, contribute to societal development, and align their actions with the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to utilize our intellect in the best possible manner.
