Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One who earns his wealth from unlawful sources damages his Hereafter.

This profound statement emphasizes the importance of acquiring wealth through lawful means and warns against the consequences of engaging in unlawful practices.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (iktasaba) "اكْتَسَبَ" means to acquire or earn, while (mālan) "مالاً" refers to wealth. (ghayri hillihi) "غَيْرِ حِلِّهِ" translates to "from unlawful sources," indicating that the wealth is obtained through means that are prohibited in Islam. Finally, (aḍarra bi ākhiratihi) "أضَرَّ بِ آخِرَتِهِ" means "damages his Hereafter," highlighting the negative consequences that such wealth can have on one's spiritual journey and ultimate destiny.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 188:

And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].

This verse emphasizes the prohibition of acquiring wealth through unjust means and warns against the consequences of such actions.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking sustenance from lawful sources and supplicating to Allah for His blessings in our endeavors.

The exegesis of this Hadith reveals profound insights into the consequences of earning wealth unlawfully. When one engages in dishonest practices to acquire wealth, they not only harm themselves in this world but also jeopardize their Hereafter. Such actions tarnish one's character, weaken their relationship with Allah, and hinder their spiritual growth.

Earning wealth through lawful means, on the other hand, is not only a means of sustenance but also a way to earn blessings and rewards from Allah. It promotes honesty, integrity, and righteousness in one's life. By adhering to the principles of Islam in our financial dealings, we not only secure our worldly affairs but also safeguard our Hereafter.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of upholding ethical standards in our pursuit of wealth. His teachings serve as a guiding light for Muslims, urging us to prioritize our spiritual well-being over worldly gains.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to earn their wealth through lawful means. It highlights the detrimental consequences of engaging in unlawful practices and emphasizes the importance of upholding ethical standards in our financial dealings. By adhering to the teachings of Islam and seeking lawful means of sustenance, we can protect our Hereafter and attain the blessings and rewards of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to the path of righteousness and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
