(Ghurar al-Hikam: Giving Examples And Using Metaphors)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لأهْلِ الاِعْتِبارِ تُضْرَبُ الأمْثالُ۔
This can be translated as,
For people who take lesson, examples are given.
In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon and learning from the examples and parables that are presented to us.
The word (i'tibar) "اِعْتِبارِ" in this Hadith refers to the act of contemplating, reflecting, and deriving lessons from something. It implies a deep understanding and application of knowledge. The word (tudrabu) "تُضْرَبُ" means "are given" or "are presented." It signifies that examples and parables are provided as a means of teaching and guiding individuals towards understanding and wisdom.
This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) often presents parables and examples to convey profound messages and lessons. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 26:
Indeed, Allah is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, 'What did Allah intend by this as an example?' He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient.
This verse highlights that Allah uses various examples, even the smallest creatures, to convey His messages. Those who have faith recognize the truth in these examples, while those who disbelieve may question their purpose. This serves as a reminder that examples and parables are not only meant to provide intellectual stimulation but also to test and guide individuals towards righteousness.
Another example can be found in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261:
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse presents the example of those who generously spend their wealth in the path of Allah. Just as a single seed can produce a bountiful harvest, Allah promises to multiply the rewards for those who give selflessly. This example encourages Muslims to be charitable and highlights the immense blessings that come from acts of generosity.
In light of these Quranic examples, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of actively seeking and reflecting upon the lessons and examples that are presented to us. It encourages us to be attentive and receptive to the wisdom embedded within these parables and to apply them in our lives.
By contemplating and learning from these examples, we can deepen our understanding of the teachings of Islam and develop a stronger connection with Allah. We can also gain insights into the consequences of our actions, the motivations behind certain behaviors, and the potential outcomes of different choices.
For example, if we come across the parable of the ant in the Quran (Surah An-Naml, verse 18), we can reflect on the diligence, organization, and unity displayed by the ants in their pursuit of sustenance. This example can inspire us to be industrious, disciplined, and cooperative in our own endeavors.
Similarly, if we encounter the parable of the spider's web in the Quran (Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 41), we can reflect on the fragility and impermanence of worldly attachments. This example can remind us to prioritize our relationship with Allah and to seek His pleasure above all else.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon and learning from the examples and parables that are presented to us. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which frequently employs such examples to convey profound messages and lessons. By actively seeking and contemplating these examples, we can deepen our understanding of Islam, gain insights into the consequences of our actions, and develop a stronger connection with Allah. May Allah guide us to be among those who take lessons from the examples presented to us and grant us the wisdom to apply them in our lives.
