Hadith #5280

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

شُكْرُ نَظيرِكَ بِحُسْنِ الإخاءِ۔

This can be translated as,

The gratitude of your equal is through good brotherhood.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in the light of the Quran.

The word (shukr) "شُكْرُ" in this Hadith refers to gratitude or thankfulness. It is an expression of appreciation and acknowledgment for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Gratitude is not only a feeling but also a state of mind that manifests in our actions and behavior towards others. It is a quality that Muslims should strive to cultivate in their lives.

The term (naziruka) "نَظِيرُكَ" means "your equal" or "someone like you." It implies that the gratitude mentioned in the Hadith is directed towards someone who is on the same level or status as oneself. This highlights the importance of showing gratitude to our fellow human beings, especially those who are similar to us in terms of social, economic, or religious standing.

The phrase (bi husni al-ikhaa) "بِحُسْنِ الإخاءِ" translates to "through good brotherhood." It emphasizes that the expression of gratitude towards our equals is through fostering strong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. Good brotherhood entails treating others with kindness, compassion, and respect, and going beyond mere words to actively support and uplift one another.

The Quranic teachings provide us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of gratitude and brotherhood. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse highlights the correlation between gratitude and the abundance of blessings from Allah. When we express gratitude towards our equals through good brotherhood, we not only strengthen our relationships but also increase the blessings in our lives.

Furthermore, the Quran encourages believers to establish strong bonds of brotherhood. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the unity and solidarity among Muslims, urging them to resolve conflicts and disputes with kindness and fairness. By practicing good brotherhood, we not only fulfill our duty towards our equals but also earn the mercy of Allah.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that gratitude towards our equals is not limited to mere words or gestures.
