Hadith #6035

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Obedience to Allah is the key to [every] right action and the rectification of [every] corruption (or of the Hereafter).

This amazing Hadith highlights the importance of obedience to Allah in all aspects of our lives.

Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. The word (ta'at) "طاعَةُ" refers to obedience, submission, and compliance. It implies following the commands and guidance of Allah with sincerity and devotion. The word (miftah) "مِفْتاحُ" means key, symbolizing that obedience to Allah is the key that unlocks the doors to success and righteousness. To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83),

And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.

This verse emphasizes the importance of obedience to Allah by highlighting the covenant made with the Children of Israel. It shows that obedience to Allah is not limited to ritual acts of worship but extends to fulfilling our responsibilities towards our parents, relatives, orphans, and the needy. The desert Arabs say, 'We have believed.' Say, 'You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'

This verse highlights the importance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger in truly attaining faith. It emphasizes that mere verbal profession of faith is not enough; rather, true belief is manifested through obedience. It assures us that if we obey Allah and His Messenger, our deeds will not be in vain. Conversely, disobedience to Allah leads to corruption and deviation from the right path. It brings about negative consequences, both individually and collectively. It disrupts our relationship with Allah and leads to a state of imbalance and chaos. Therefore, it is essential for us as Muslims to prioritize obedience to Allah in all aspects of our lives, seeking His pleasure and guidance in everything we do.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of obedience to Allah as the key to every right action and the rectification of every corruption. This obedience is not limited to certain aspects of our lives but encompasses every aspect. By obeying Allah, we align ourselves with His divine guidance and attain righteousness. Conversely, disobedience leads to corruption and deviation from the right path.
