(Ghurar al-Hikam: Coming To The Aid Of The Aggrieved)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مِنْ أفْضَلِ المَعْرُوفِ إغاثَةُ المَلْهُوفِ۔

This statement emphasizes the importance of coming to the aid of those who are aggrieved or in distress. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ighathatu) "إغاثَةُ" in this Hadith refers to providing assistance or support to someone in need. It implies extending a helping hand to those who are suffering or experiencing hardship. This act of benevolence is described as one of the (afḍalil maʿrūf) "أفْضَلِ المَعْرُوفِ", meaning one of the best forms of virtuous deeds.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of helping those in need. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177),

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves.

This verse highlights the significance of giving to those who are in need, including the aggrieved.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Haj (22:36), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar.

This verse encourages us to not only provide for ourselves but also to feed the needy and the beggar, thus emphasizing the importance of helping those who are less fortunate.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the significance of actively seeking out and assisting those who are aggrieved. It encourages us to be proactive in recognizing the suffering of others and extending our support to alleviate their pain. This act of kindness not only brings relief to the one in distress but also strengthens the bond of brotherhood and compassion within the Muslim community.

When we come to the aid of the aggrieved, we demonstrate the true essence of Islam, which is rooted in compassion, empathy, and selflessness. By extending our help, we fulfill the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and follow the noble example set by our Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

Moreover, the act of helping the aggrieved has far-reaching consequences. It not only brings immediate relief to the one in need but also has a profound impact on the individual providing assistance. It cultivates a sense of gratitude, humility, and empathy within us, reminding us of our own blessings and encouraging us to be grateful for what we have. It also serves as a means of purifying our souls and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the numerous opportunities we have in our daily lives to come to the aid of the aggrieved. It could be as simple as offering a helping hand to a neighbor in need, supporting charitable causes, or volunteering our time and skills to assist those facing difficulties. By actively seeking out opportunities to help others, we embody the teachings of Islam and contribute to the betterment of society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of coming to the aid of the aggrieved as one of the best forms of benevolent acts. It encourages us to actively seek out opportunities to help those in need, reflecting the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by our Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By extending our support to the aggrieved, we not only alleviate their suffering but also cultivate compassion, gratitude, and empathy within ourselves. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) enable us to be a source of relief and comfort for those in distress, and may He accept our efforts as acts of worship.
