Hadith #7551

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ عَلِمَ (عَمِلَ) ِهْتَدى۔

This can be translated as,

One who gains knowledge (or acts [upon his knowledge]) is rightly guided.

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (‘alima) "عَلِمَ" in the Hadith refers to knowledge. Knowledge is a powerful tool that enables individuals to understand the truth and distinguish between right and wrong. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The acquisition of knowledge is highly encouraged in Islam, as it leads to guidance and enlightenment.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,

Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.

This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. It implies that knowledge is a means of guidance and remembrance.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah describes the people of knowledge as those who are granted wisdom and understanding. He says,

He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been granted wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.

This verse emphasizes that true knowledge is not merely the accumulation of information, but it is accompanied by wisdom and understanding.

The Hadith also mentions the importance of action in conjunction with knowledge. The word (‘amila) "عَمِلَ" in the Hadith refers to acting upon one's knowledge. It signifies that knowledge should not remain theoretical, but it should be translated into practical actions. Islam encourages individuals to not only gain knowledge but also to implement it in their lives.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the significance of action in conjunction with knowledge. In Surah Al-Asr (103:3), Allah says,

Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and advise each other to truth and advise each other to patience.

This verse highlights that true guidance is attained by combining faith with righteous actions. Mere knowledge without action is insufficient to attain true guidance.

The consequences of gaining knowledge and acting upon it are profound. When an individual seeks knowledge and implements it in their life, they are guided towards the right path. They are able to make informed decisions, avoid wrongdoing, and fulfill their responsibilities towards Allah and humanity. Knowledge empowers individuals to navigate through the challenges of life and make choices that align with the teachings of Islam.

Moreover, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a motivation for Muslims to continuously seek knowledge. It reminds us that knowledge is not limited to a specific age or stage in life. Rather, it is a lifelong journey of learning and growth. Muslims should strive to acquire knowledge from authentic sources, such as the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), in order to attain guidance and righteousness.
