Hadith #5812

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

أحْسَنُ الصَّمْتِ ماكانَ عَنِ الزَّلَلِ۔

This can be translated as,

The best silence is that which prevents [one] from error.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ahsanu) "أحْسَنُ" in this Hadith refers to the highest level of excellence and perfection. It signifies the utmost goodness and superiority. It is important to note that this word is not used casually, but rather to emphasize the exceptional nature of the silence being described.

The term (as-samt) "الصَّمْتِ" means silence or refraining from speech. Silence can be a powerful tool, as it allows one to reflect, contemplate, and avoid unnecessary speech that may lead to error or harm. It is a means of self-control and discipline.

The word (az-zalal) "الزَّلَلِ" refers to error, mistake, or deviation from the right path. It encompasses both minor and major errors, whether in speech, action, or belief. This includes anything that goes against the teachings of Islam or leads one away from the path of righteousness.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of silence and guarding one's tongue. In Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:3), Allah says,

Successful indeed are the believers, those who offer their prayers with humility and attentiveness, and those who turn away from idle talk.

This verse highlights the significance of avoiding idle or unnecessary speech, which can often lead to error or sin.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199), Allah advises Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to

hold to forgiveness, command what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.

This verse encourages the Prophet (ﷺ) to remain silent in the face of ignorance and avoid engaging in futile arguments or debates that may lead to error or misunderstanding.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the wisdom and prudence in remaining silent when there is a risk of making mistakes or causing harm. It is a reminder to Muslims to exercise caution in their speech and to prioritize the preservation of truth and righteousness.

Silence can be a means of preventing misunderstandings, avoiding unnecessary conflicts, and maintaining harmony in relationships. It allows one to listen attentively, gain knowledge, and reflect on the words of others before responding. By practicing silence in such situations, one can prevent the occurrence of errors that may arise from hasty or ill-considered speech.

Moreover, silence can also be a form of worship and devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). In Surah Al-A'raf (7:205), Allah says,

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.

This verse encourages believers to remember Allah silently, without the need for vocal expression. It emphasizes the importance of inner reflection and contemplation.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that silence can be a powerful tool for self-improvement, self-control, and avoiding errors. It encourages us to think before we speak, to weigh our words carefully, and to refrain from engaging in conversations that may lead to misunderstandings or harm. By practicing silence in a manner that aligns with the teachings of the Quran, we can strive for excellence in our speech and actions, and ultimately, seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
