Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مِنْ أعْظَمِ المِحَنِ دَوامُ الفِتَنِ

which translates to

One of the greatest tribulations is the continuation of strife.

Let us begin by examining the key words in this Hadith. The word (mihan) "مِحَنِ" refers to trials, tests, or tribulations. It signifies challenges or difficulties that individuals or communities may face. The word (dawam) "دَوَامُ" means continuation or persistence. And finally, (fitan) "الفِتَنِ" refers to strife, discord, or conflicts that arise within society.

To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155,

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse highlights that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life. They serve as tests from Allah to assess our faith and patience.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?

This verse emphasizes that trials are a necessary part of our journey towards spiritual growth and development. They serve as a means to purify our souls and strengthen our faith.

Now, let us delve into the deeper meaning of the Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the significance of the continuation of strife as one of the greatest tribulations. Strife refers to conflicts, divisions, and discord within society. It can manifest in various forms such as political unrest, social injustice, sectarianism, or even personal disputes.

The continuation of strife is a great trial because it leads to the deterioration of societal harmony, peace, and progress. It hinders the growth and well-being of individuals and communities. Strife creates an environment of hostility, mistrust, and animosity, which ultimately hampers the overall development of society.

To illustrate the consequences of the continuation of strife, we can refer to the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) in the Quran. In Surah Yusuf, we learn about the jealousy and enmity that Yusuf's brothers harbored towards him. Their strife led to Yusuf being thrown into a well and subsequently sold into slavery. This incident not only caused immense suffering for Yusuf, but it also tore apart a family and caused years of anguish and separation.

Similarly, in the time of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), the Muslim Ummah faced significant strife and discord. The Battle of Jamal and the Battle of Siffin are prime examples of the consequences of the continuation of strife. These conflicts resulted in the loss of countless lives, the division of the Muslim community, and the weakening of the Islamic state.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the epitome of knowledge and wisdom, understood the detrimental effects of strife on society. He emphasized the need for unity, justice, and reconciliation. His teachings and actions serve as a timeless reminder for Muslims to strive for peace, harmony, and the resolution of conflicts.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the continuation of strife as one of the greatest tribulations. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to actively work towards resolving conflicts and promoting unity within society. By reflecting on the Quranic verses and the lessons from history, we can understand the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's words and strive to create a society free from the trials of ongoing strife. May Allah guide us all on the path of peace and unity.
