Hadith #3023

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "اَلاِحْتِمالُ زَيْنُ السِّياسَةِ۔" This is translated as,

Tolerance is the embellishment of politics [and leadership].

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (al-ithmal) "اَلاِحْتِمالُ" refers to tolerance, patience, and forbearance. It is the ability to endure hardships, difficulties, and differences without reacting negatively. (zayn) "زَيْنُ" means embellishment or adornment, something that enhances or beautifies. And (al-siyasah) "السِّياسَةِ" refers to politics or leadership.

To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of tolerance and patience in various contexts. For example, in Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah says,

Those who spend [in Allah's cause] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights the virtues of patience, forgiveness, and tolerance, which are essential qualities for leaders and politicians.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah instructs the believers,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse teaches us to avoid mocking or belittling others, as it may lead to division and animosity. Instead, it encourages us to be tolerant and respectful towards one another.

Imam Ali's statement,

Tolerance is the embellishment of politics [and leadership],

emphasizes the significance of tolerance in the realm of politics and leadership. It highlights that a leader who possesses the quality of tolerance is adorned with a virtue that enhances their effectiveness and influence.

A tolerant leader is able to navigate through diverse opinions and conflicting interests, seeking common ground and promoting unity. They are patient in the face of challenges and setbacks, and they do not let anger or impatience cloud their judgment. Such a leader is able to build bridges, foster understanding, and create an environment of harmony and cooperation.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified the quality of tolerance throughout his life. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, he remained patient and forgiving towards those who opposed him. His knowledge and wisdom enabled him to make informed decisions and resolve conflicts with fairness and justice.

The consequences of practicing tolerance in politics and leadership are far-reaching. It leads to the establishment of a just and inclusive society, where the rights and dignity of all individuals are respected. Tolerance promotes dialogue and understanding, allowing for the exchange of ideas and the growth of a vibrant and progressive community. It also fosters trust and loyalty among the people, as they feel heard and valued by their leaders.

As Muslims, we are called upon to embody the teachings of the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt. By embracing tolerance in our personal lives and encouraging it in our leaders, we contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. Let us remember Imam Ali's thoughtful words and strive to adorn our politics and leadership with the virtue of tolerance, for it is indeed the key to success and prosperity.
