لِيَكُنْ أوْثَقُ النّاسِ لَدَيْكَ أنْطَقَهُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ۔
Let the most trustworthy of people in your estimation be the one who is most truthful in his speech.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of trustworthiness and truthfulness in our interactions with others. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, advises us to consider the most trustworthy individuals as those who are consistently truthful in their speech.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a comprehensive understanding. The word (awthaq) "أوثق" means "the most trustworthy" or "the most reliable." It refers to a person who is steadfast in fulfilling their commitments, maintaining confidentiality, and being honest in their dealings with others. This quality is highly regarded in Islam, as trust forms the foundation of any relationship.
The word (antahaqahum) "أنطقهم" means
he who is most truthful in his speech.
It highlights the importance of speaking the truth in all circumstances. The one who is truthful in their speech is someone who does not lie, deceive, or manipulate others. They convey information accurately and sincerely, without distorting or concealing the truth.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8):
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse emphasizes the importance of justice and truthfulness in our interactions with others. It encourages Muslims to be witnesses for Allah, upholding justice even in the face of adversity or personal biases. By being truthful and trustworthy, we fulfill our duty to Allah and maintain the integrity of our character.
Another verse that aligns with the teachings of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11):
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of respecting others and refraining from mocking or belittling them. By being truthful and trustworthy, we avoid engaging in harmful speech that can damage relationships and create animosity. Instead, we should strive to uplift and support one another, recognizing the inherent worth and potential in every individual.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith has profound implications for our personal and social lives. When we prioritize truthfulness and trustworthiness, we create an environment of transparency and sincerity. Others will feel confident in confiding in us, seeking our advice, and relying on our integrity. This fosters stronger bonds of friendship, family, and community.
Conversely, when we lack trustworthiness and truthfulness, we erode the foundation of relationships. Doubt and suspicion replace trust, leading to misunderstandings, conflicts, and broken bonds. The consequences of dishonesty can be far-reaching, affecting not only our personal relationships but also our reputation and credibility in society.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of embodying the qualities of truthfulness and trustworthiness in our daily lives. By following the guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and adhering to the teachings of the Quran, we can strive to be the most trustworthy individuals in the eyes of Allah and our fellow Muslims. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to uphold these noble qualities.
