مَنْ خَلا بِالْعِلْمِ لَمْ تُوحِشْهُ خَلْوَةٌ۔
One who is alone with knowledge does not feel frightened by [his] loneliness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ خَلا بِالْعِلْمِ لَمْ تُوحِشْهُ خَلْوَةٌ۔
This can be translated as,
One who is alone with knowledge does not feel frightened by [his] loneliness.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (khala) "خَلا" in this Hadith refers to being alone or in solitude. It signifies a state of seclusion where one is physically isolated from others. The word (ilm) "عِلْمِ" means knowledge, which encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. It is important to note that the knowledge referred to here is not limited to academic or intellectual knowledge, but also includes spiritual and moral understanding.
This Hadith highlights the strength and tranquility that comes from possessing knowledge. When a person is truly knowledgeable, they are not afraid of being alone. They find solace and comfort in their own company because their knowledge serves as a companion to them. This is because knowledge enlightens the mind, strengthens the heart, and provides guidance in all aspects of life.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance and value of knowledge. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. It signifies that knowledge brings about a higher level of understanding and awareness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse indicates that knowledge is a means of elevation and honor in the sight of Allah. It is a source of spiritual growth and development.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. When a person possesses true knowledge, they are never truly alone. Their knowledge becomes their companion, guiding them through the challenges and uncertainties of life. This knowledge provides them with the confidence and strength to face any situation, even when they are physically isolated from others.
For example, imagine a scholar who spends hours studying and researching in solitude. They are not afraid of being alone because their knowledge keeps them company. They find joy and fulfillment in their pursuit of knowledge, and their solitude becomes a source of tranquility rather than fear.
Similarly, a person who possesses deep spiritual knowledge and understanding finds solace in their connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They are able to engage in acts of worship and reflection even when they are physically alone. Their knowledge of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) provides them with a sense of purpose and direction, allowing them to navigate through life's challenges with confidence and resilience.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the power and significance of knowledge. True knowledge brings about a sense of tranquility and strength, enabling one to overcome the fear of loneliness. It is through knowledge that we find companionship and guidance, even in the absence of physical company. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek and acquire beneficial knowledge, and may it be a source of comfort and strength in our lives.
