Hadith #9020

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "التكبر يضع الرفيع" which translates to

Arrogance degrades the elevated.

This beautiful Hadith highlights the destructive nature of arrogance and its detrimental effects on one's character and position.

Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (al-takabbur) "التكبر" refers to arrogance, pride, or haughtiness. It is the state of considering oneself superior to others, looking down upon them, and belittling them. This negative trait is condemned in Islam as it goes against the principles of humility, equality, and justice.

The word (yuda) "يضع" means to degrade, lower, or bring down. It signifies the negative consequences that arrogance has on an individual, regardless of their elevated status or position. This Hadith emphasizes that no matter how high one may be in social, intellectual, or spiritual standing, arrogance will ultimately lead to their downfall and degradation.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against arrogance in numerous verses, highlighting its destructive nature and the consequences it brings upon those who possess it.

In Surah Al-Qasas, verse 83, Allah says,

That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.

This verse reminds us that true success lies in seeking the Hereafter and not in seeking worldly power or dominance. Arrogance blinds individuals from recognizing the transient nature of worldly achievements and prevents them from striving for eternal success.

In Surah Al-Hadid, verse 23, Allah says,

So that you may not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.

This verse cautions against feeling proud and boastful about one's accomplishments, as they are ultimately bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Arrogance leads to ingratitude and a false sense of self-sufficiency, distancing us from the blessings and mercy of Allah.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that arrogance not only tarnishes one's character but also leads to the degradation of their elevated status. It is a self-destructive trait that blinds individuals from recognizing their own faults and weaknesses, hindering their personal growth and development.
