Hadith #6636

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العدل أفضل سجية" which translates to

Justice is the best trait.

This profound statement emphasizes the importance and superiority of justice in the eyes of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

The word (ʿadl) "عدل" in this Hadith refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It is the act of treating others with equality and ensuring that everyone receives their due rights. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, as it is a reflection of the divine attributes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice. In Surah An-Nisa, verse 135, Allah says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both.

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse reminds us that justice should not be compromised due to personal biases or animosity towards others. Muslims are commanded to be just, even if it means overcoming their own prejudices and treating others fairly.

Imam Ali's statement,

Justice is the best trait,

I would prefer to be just to my enemy than unjust to my friend,
